Swan Rangers Hike Muddy Jewel!

The Swan Crest above Noisy Creek! (Keith Hammer photos)

Twelve Swan Rangers hiked DNRC lands between the Jewel Basin Road and Mud Lake on a crunchy Saturday, January 5, 2019!

Warm days with rain but freezing nights have put low elevation skiing on hold for a while!

The Rangers head out on a flat-lander hike . . .

. . . only to find themselves on a "high" ridge!

A frosty pine bough . . .

. . . and hoar frost on a grass seed head!

While this white pine appears to be dropping lots of seed . . .

. . . it is a birch seed that set root and is growing in this larch "nurse" stump!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 8:30, leaving at 9:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
