Birch Lake as seen from Mount Aeneas, with Crater Lake in the distance

Birch Lake is a popular fishing and picnic spot in Jewel Basin Hiking Area. It is a short, relatively flat hike from Camp Misery Trailhead. Before the days of Lewis & Clark, the Kootenai Indians used this pass to cross the mountains out of the Flathead Valley to hunt bison on the Great Plains.
