Dr. Hike a Day

A Hike A Day Keeps the Doctor Away!

Want to be happier, healthier and live longer?  Make an appointment with Dr. Swan Range!

Kalispell exercise physiologist Stu Levitt, Ph.D., says some of the best kind of exercises in the Swan Range are free, fun and will help you and your family be healthier. “People I work with are often concerned about watching their weight and staying heart-healthy,” Levitt said. “Great! Let’s go out and have some fun.”

Walking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are the kinds of exercise that will reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Plus, they’re good for muscle tone and healthy joints.

“Outdoor exercise can be every bit as effective as taking medication for these health problems, and is less expensive and a lot more fun,” Levitt said. Exercising in the peace and quiet reduce stress, which is a major contributor to disease.

“Don’t worry about bagging peaks, logging miles or beating the clock,” said Levitt. “The important thing is to go outside and move. Just go out and explore.”

One of the great things about the Swan Range is that major trailheads and access points are only a short drive from town. Flathead residents can enjoy outings after work, on their days off, or when one can spare a few hours.

Swan Ranger Loren Kreck explored the Swan Range for more than 50 years and, at age 85, said the Swan Range is the nearest thing he found to a Fountain of Youth.

Informal hiking clubs like the Swan Rangers make outdoor exercise more social. The Swan Rangers meet for breakfast Saturdays at the Echo Lake Café.
