Swan Rangers Ski Swan Wildlife Refuge!

Sunshine and dizzy coyote tracks! (Keith Hammer photos except one)

Eleven Swan Rangers skied the Swan River National Wildlife Refuge on a sometimes sunny Saturday, March 9, 2019!

All but the main river was well frozen with no open leads to negotiate.

The refuge was a blank slate with no recent human tracks!

Deep snow or short kiosk?

Snow telling the story of a raven-size bird landing, pecking something out of the snow, and walking away!

Sometimes getting a group photo is like herding cats . . .

. . . and begets a reciprocal obligation! (Duane Howell photo)

Cottonwood and spruce trees along the Swan River.

Fat cottonwood buds hint of Spring . . .

. . . while snow drifts and cornices still hold a Winter grip!

Attempts to farm went bust, resulting in the gift of the land to the government for a wildlife refuge!

Hall Peak and the Swan Crest get a spot of sun!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday (with rare arctic exceptions) at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 8:30, leaving at 9:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
