Swan Rangers Seek Refuge Along Swan River!

Ranger enjoying the Swan River! (Keith Hammer photos except one)

Ten Swan Rangers skied Bog Road at the Swan River Wildlife Refuge on a turned-sunny Saturday, February 22, 2020!

It was a cold ski to the river, then a warm, sunny ski around the old homesteads and back!

Nighttime hoar frost on cattails . . .

While this may look like the fossil imprint of a velociraptor, it is tracks of a small rodent getting pounced on by a modern raptor!

An open lead of water made for . . .

. . . a tricky stream crossing, but at least there was . . . (Joel Vignere photo)

. . . an old wood stove to warm up by!

The Rangers figured they otter come across these tracks again in the distance . . .

. . . where otters climb up over the dike . . .

. . . and slide down to the mostly frozen river oxbow!

Once the sun came out . . .

. . . the Rangers were hard to hold back . . .

. . . across the Swan River!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 8:30, leaving at 9:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When recreating in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.
