Swan Rangers Hike Up High and Down Under!

Hiking up Mount Aeneas in Jewel Basin. (Debra Schweitzer photo)

Swan Rangers sent in photos from hikes ranging from Mount Aeneas to Australia in the week ending August 15, 2020!

Click here or scroll down for their photos and details!

While the Swan Ranger Saturday group outings remain suspended until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic, we will get a report out each week with items of interest to folks trying to get outside for some "social distancing" and spirit-calming fresh air.

Debra Schweitzer hike up Jewel Basin's Mount Aeneas with relatives and sent in our lead photo and this photo of a mountain goat "sharing" the trail!

Philippa Goninan sent in these four photos of her six-day "winter" hike with friends along the Scenic Rim of Queensland, Austrailia, a World Heritage Rainforest!

Thank you, Philippa!

Pam Willison sent in a couple photos of her hike with Norma, Mary and Pat into the Red Owl Burn, passing . . .

. . . these beautiful galls on a wild rose bush along the way!

Bob and Carol Hermes sent in this photo of their hike up the Lakeside to Blacktail Trail, a trail they helped conceive and fund in cooperation with the Forest Service!

Pat Jaquith sent in this striking photo of a hummingbird checking out surveyor's tape in the Kuhns Wildlife Management Area!

Keith Hammer hiked into Krause Basin to hopefully confirm DNRC did not recently log a couple precious glades of big western hemlock that it promised not to log in 2006. They were thankfully untouched by logging and had only a moderate amount of blow-down from this year's high wind storms.

These big hemlock, closed-canopy forests are increasingly rare. It was heartening to see these glades intact compared to the 360' video Keith shot a few days earlier of the nearby "salvage logging!"

Keith also caught two huckleberry pickers red-handed while hiking earlier in the week but he refuses to reveal who they are, where they were, or whether he benefited from any of the berries!

The Swan Ranger Saturday group outings remain suspended until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic.

If you have interesting photos of your socially distant times outdoors, send them along with a description to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and we'll try to work them into these weekly reports!
