Swan Rangers Ski Among Bears, Wolverine!

Krause Basin a winter wonderland once again! (Keith Hammer photos)

Just when you thought it safe to remove the bear spray from your pack belt for the season, eleven Swan Rangers discovered bear beds and wolverine tracks while skiing in Krause Basin on Saturday, December 6, 2014!

Couldn't be sure if the small bear was black or griz, but it had rested and bedded down in a couple places beneath hemlock trees since the snowfall stopped Friday.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks reported last week that only about half of the grizzly bears they monitor had gone into dens thus far.

Unsuspecting Swan Rangers set to venture out into the wilds!

Bear tracks incoming!

Bear bed (well maybe just a short resting spot or a failed attempt to make a snow angel)!

Bear tracks outgoing!

Wolverine tracks too - just so bears don't get all the attention!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 8:30, leaving at 9:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

Everyone is welcome!
