Swan Rangers Recon Krause Knob!

The Rangers on an old logging road on "The Knob!" (Keith Hammer photos)

Ten Swan Rangers hiked a variety of short loops on "The Knob" in Krause Basin on Saturday, October 3, 2015!

They took advantage of forecast high winds to stay in the low country and inspect unauthorized trail clearing discovered earlier this summer, even though the Forest Service's 1988 Noisy Face Recreation Plan clearly limits the trail system in this key habitat for elk, grizzly bear and other wildlife.

Nothing like a steep old skid trail to get the heart pumping right at the start!

Birch leaves are turning trails into little "yellow brick roads!"

Even though the 1988 Noisy Face Recreation Plan required that routes "will not be marked on the ground," so they would diminish over time, someone has recently been blazing trails anyway!

And someone has been digging trail tread where it is not allowed under the 1988 Plan. There's plenty of room for people and wildlife in Krause Basin, but only if people limit the trail system and share the habitat!

The Rangers ended their outing by picking up a pile of trash dumped by someone who drove over a road closure berm and out of sight enough to do their nasty deed!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 7:30, leaving at 8:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
