Swan Rangers Hike Switchback Trail!

A view of Mud, Echo and Flathead Lakes! (Keith Hammer photos)

Ten Swan Rangers hiked a damp Switchback Trail on a clearing Saturday, June 11, 2016!

They saw a broad array of wildflowers and learned from other hikers that the Jewel Basin Road is still snowed-in a bit prior to the Camp Misery parking lot.

Breaking out of the trees and into the old burn, where the views get fantastic!

This hen grouse charged the lead Ranger and refused to yield the trail until her chicks were safely hidden in the brush. Then she posed on this log and let the Rangers pass while giving them the stinky-eye!

Beargrass backlit by early morning light!

The Rangers nearly bumped their heads on the cloud ceiling before the sky began to clear . . .

. . . which made for nice views south along the Swan Crest . . .

. . . and north along the Swan Crest!

Young spruce cones up in the alpine zone!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 7:30, leaving at 8:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
