Swan Rangers Hike Switchback Trail!

A view of Mud, Echo and Flathead Lakes! (Keith Hammer photos)

Eighteen Swan Rangers hiked the Switchback Trail to snow line on a sunny Saturday, April 18, 2015!

The south-facing slopes make this trail a good early season hike. Substantial snow was not encountered until about a half-mile short of Alpine Trail #7!

Click here for a map of the Switchback Trail.

Some of the switchbacks on the ridge in the burn were snow covered . . .

. . . but the snow pack didn't become continuous until the trail quits switchbacking and sidehills to meet Alpine #7 . . .

. . . which was a good excuse to turn around and have a little lunch in a dry, sunny spot!

While the Swan Crest still holds on to its snow pack . . .

. . . meadow rue . . .

. . . trillium, and other wildflowers are beginning to appear at lower elevations!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 8:30, leaving at 9:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills. (Times will shift one hour earlier beginning May 2!)

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
