Swan Rangers Hike Sixmile Lookout Trail!

Swan Lake, Flathead Lake and Flathead Valley (Keith Hammer photos)

Eleven Swan Rangers hiked the Sixmile Lookout Trail on a sunny Saturday, July 7, 2018!

Most continued on past Alpine Trail #7 to fantastic views from Sixmile Peak!

Click here for a map of the Sixmile Lookout Trail.

It's all dry and green at the trailhead . . .

. . . but there are a few snowbanks yet to cross above Alpine Trail #7!

There are still signs of life among the many whitebark pine skeletons on Sixmile Peak . . .

. . . as well as among the Rangers snacking there! No fire lookout remains atop Sixmile Peak, but it offers some stunning views . . .

. . . including views looking south down the Swan Valley, west to Swan and Flathead Lakes as shown at the top of this post . . .

. . . north along the Swan Crest and into Glacier National Park on the horizon . . .

. . . east down Quintonkon Creek past Hungry Horse Resevoir (center) to the Flathead Range . . .

. . . and southeast along the Swan Crest into the Bob Marshall Wilderness!

With one's head in the clouds, however, don't overlook the small stuff like ths mariposa lily with buggy friend . . .

. . . these monkeyflowers . . .

. . . or this butt shot of a western tanager!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 7:30, leaving at 8:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
