Swan Rangers Hike Peterson Creek Trail!

Peterson Creek Trail crossing the Red Owl burn! (Keith Hammer photos)

Fourteen Swan Rangers hiked the Peterson Creek Trail on Saturday, July 25, with most turning around after lunch in the Red Owl burn and a few continuing on to the Quintonkon divide!

There were great views, laughs and ripe huckleberries to be had along the way!

After crossing the creek near the beginning of the trail, a few switchbacks and a climb of nearly 2,500' . . .

. . . the old Red Owl burn offers great views of the Swan Range both north . . .

. . . and south, along with the Mission Mountains, Swan Lake and Swan Valley!

There's a nice lunch spot on a rocky point in the old Red Owl burn which also offers a look at the last stretch of trail continuing to . . .

. . . the Swan Crest and Quintonkon divide.

There are a few scree slopes and avalanche chutes along that last stretch of trail!

A snow avalanche last winter broke off a number of large trees - and imbedded a rock in this one for good measure!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 7:30, leaving at 8:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
