Swan Rangers Hike Muddy Jewel!

The morning was sunny and warm! (Keith Hammer photos)

Ten Swan Rangers hiked State Forest land between Mud Lake and Jewel Basin Road during the sunny part of Saturday, April 8, 2017!

DNRC's old logging units are thawing off sooner than the surrounding forests and offering signs of early green-up.

Group photo with shadow selfie!

The Rangers saw lots of elk tracks and scat!

Pileated woodpeckers really like this old blue-marked "leave tree!"

There were mushrooms, but no morels yet!

This old rotting stump is now nursing a young tree!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 8:30, leaving at 9:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
