Swan Rangers Enjoy Spring Squall!

Nice weather, as always, on a Swan Ranger Saturday! (Keith Hammer photos)

Twelve Swan Rangers enjoyed a prolonged spring squall while hiking the Echo - Broken Leg Trail on Saturday, April 12, 2014!

The trail is mostly snow-free until Deer Creek, then a bit of post-holing is in order as remaining snow pack becomes intermittant.

Minor snow squall warning evident when leaving the parking lot.

Skunk cabbage: signs of spring along the drive to the trail head!

Deer Creek carrying the winter snow pack away!

Hey, maybe it's not going to squall after all?

It's a squall, y'all!

The trail starts at the site of the historic Echo Ranger Station, where Bob Marshall in 1928 started his epic hike through the wilderness that now bears his name. The Forest Service currently "manages' the site as a gravel pit, informal shooting range and trash heap!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 8:30, leaving at 9:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
