Swan Rangers Attempt Strawberry Lake!

A grand view of Echo and Flathead Lakes! (Keith Hammer photos)

Fourteen Swan Rangers hiked to the top of the switchbacks on the Strawberry Lake Trail on Saturday, May 9, but turned around when they encountered hard-packed snow on the steep sidehill traverse to the lake!

A few bushwhacked up to a cliffy opening to get a little better view and a sunny snack spot!

This photo may imply that some Swan Rangers are brighter than others, but it was largely those in the shadows that were smart enough to NOT bushwhack to a higher snack spot!

The decision by some to bushwhack straight up did not go unnoticed . . .

. . . by this grouse that calls such steep ridges home year-round!

Woodpeckers, on the other hand, located this condominium along the lower stretch of the trail!

Meadow rue has the most amazing way of unfurling its leaves and flower bud . . .

. . . but the mountain ash is pretty cool too!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 7:30, leaving at 8:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
