Swan Rangers Hike Switchback, then Malfunction!

A view of Flathead, Echo and Mud Lakes! (Keith Hammer photos)

Ten Swan Rangers hiked the Switchback Trail to Malfunction Junction on a glorious Saturday, June 29, 2019!

Malfunction Junction was very busy with Jewel Basin hikers, but the Rangers had Switchback all to themselves!

Click here for a map of the Switchback Trail.

Several trails and the old co-ax track head out in seven different directions from Malfunction Junction where . . .

. . . you meet the nicest people!

There are so many switchbacks on the Switchback Trail (79 to be exact) that . . .

. . . even the beargrass have switchbacks!

"Seventy nine switchbacks and we're marching on, into the clear blue sky up beyond!"

The ceanothus is in full bloom, very fragrant, . . .

. . . and very tasty to this swallowtail butterfly!

Check out the fuzzy orange "bloomers" on this butterfly's legs!

This bee's legs are orange because they are holding pollen as it works penstemon flowers!

Arnica in bloom along the trail.

Looking north along the Swan Crest from Malfunction Junction to Infinity Ridge, Peters Ridge and beyond!

It was one of those days that makes you want to sing from the tree tops!

This "quiet fireworks" beargrass reminds us to have a happy and safe 4th of July!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 7:30, leaving at 8:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
